I’d Rather Be Your Mommy

I was having one of those mornings with my children when all of my patience had been widdled down to nothing. After feeling so powerless, I decided to change the tone of the room. I asked the kids to gather around for a story. I decided to read I’d Rather Be Your Mommy, from Home School Adventure Co. This ultimately resulted in being the best decision to turn our crazy upside down morning right side up again.

I’d Rather Be Your Mommy, by Stacy Farrell, is an inspirational, beautifully written picture book. The author, Stacy Farrell, wrote this book years ago when her sons were born. It conveys the message that with all the marvelous wonders in our whole wide world, nothing compares to being one’s mommy. My surmounting frustration, my mixture of anger, sadness, feelings of inadequacy, impatience, and fatigue slowly melted away with each page I read to my children. With so many emotions that morning already, by the middle of the book, tears were streaming down. These were now tears due to overwhelming joy and love. Every statement of “I’d Rather Be Your Mommy” repeated within the book was a reminder to myself. Regardless of all of the daily struggles, when it comes down to it, I love being my children’s mommy.

Stacy Farrell spoke everything my heart was feeling as a mom. Raising a child can be challenging, but we would not trade it for anything else in the world. Reading the book with my children was a great way for me to express what I was feeling. It allowed us to connect through our real life story. We discussed the strength of a mother-child bond. This book was there for us at just the right time. It continues to be a heartwarming story when we just want to curl up together for a story during the day and also for bedtime.

There is something about coloring that is calming. After we read the story, my daughters and I had some family coloring time. Most of the time, the kids color on their own, and it is a good opportunity for me to tidy up the kitchen or do laundry. But once in a while, I will decide to put household chores on hold, and just enjoy being with them. That day, I decided to slow down and appreciate this time. So we colored together. It was so relaxing, and it felt good doing something as simple as this together. The coloring book contains most of the pages from the story in a coloring book format. It is a nice touch to reiterate the beautiful message of the book. The kids can internalize the words, and personalize it with their choice of colors.
